Course Description 

This course aims to introduce students the basic concepts of linguistics. It consists of an overview of core and general areas of linguistics i.e., phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax, etc. It also establishes the relationship of language with other areas of knowledge. What is linguistics and its branches? Fundamental Concepts of and Distinctions in Linguistics. The Study of Language Variation.     

 What is linguistics? Linguistics as a Science, Descriptive, Comparative, and Historical linguistics. Branches of Linguistics: Psycho-linguistics, Socio-linguistics, and Anthropological linguistics. What does historical linguistics study? (phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic changes) Difference between the British and American English, Development of Modern Linguistics, Emergence of Modern Linguistics: Saussure Structuralism                                                     

 

Course Objectives 

1. To produce well-rounded young professionals with sound knowledge of linguistics,

2. To develop a deep understanding of the contemporary issues in linguistics and

3. To serve as a nursery for the MPhil/MS and doctoral programs.
